Costco

Friday, April 27th, 2007

Costco membership: $25.

24 large chocolate chip cookies that are almost as good as my mom's: $6.

4 bottles of Martinelli's sparkling apple juice: also $6.

Getting back at jX for weeks of referring to the apartment I'm sharing with Colin as a "gay lovenest": priceless.

Elders

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007

Bill Clinton's biggest mistake was not his involvement with Monica Lewinsky. His biggest mistake was firing Joycelyn Elders.

If he had listened to Joycelyn, though, maybe he wouldn't have made the second (more embarrassing) mistake.

Rejected

Friday, April 20th, 2007

I came up with several new "matching questions" for OkCupid with some help from Val, but OkCupid decided not to use them.

Which is most important in a desk chair?

  1. Rolls easily.
  2. Spins fast enough to make you dizzy.
  3. Makes you look important.
  4. Ergonomic for oral sex.

Which score on the Slut Test is a "failing" score?

  1. 10% Slut.
  2. 90% Slut.
  3. Both.
  4. Neither.

What does lol *really* mean?

  1. Chuckling quietly to myself.
  2. Everyone within earshot wonders what's so funny.
  3. End of sentence, like a period.
  4. I have thrown up my hands in surrender.

Google 411

Friday, April 20th, 2007

Google launched a free 411 service just in time for my move from San Diego to Mountain View. I found it useful, but it could have been even more useful if it:

  • Gave better location information for things in malls. For example, the Goodwill donation spot at 570 Showers Drive would be better described as "in the parking lot near Mervyns and near Showers Drive".
  • Knew the difference between Goodwill stores and Goodwill donation spots.
  • Knew how to answer questions like "Where can I find a Denny's along I-5 North within the next hour?", rather than simple city and radius searches.

Store hours would be nice too, but the service would also have to know when to say something like "Beach City Grill closes whenever the owner feels like closing, so you are advised to call before driving there."

Ice cream

Friday, April 20th, 2007

For years, I have lived in fear of putting ice cream "back" into the fridge instead of the freezer. Guess what I did just two days after moving back to Mountain View?

To my surprise, it did not melt completely. It became soft, and a lot of the water went to the bottom of the container, but it was still passable as ice cream after I returned it to its proper home.

Where should I fly?

Friday, April 20th, 2007

Thanks to repeated trips within California, I now have credit for two one-way tickets between any Southwest cities in the continental US. The credit expires in February 2008. Where should I go, and when?

I was thinking of visiting Portland (plus Eugene), Seattle, or Boston (plus New York), since I have friends in each of those cities.

If I start at SJC and fly to Boston or New York, in which city should I attempt to get a 2-hour layover? I don't think I'd enjoy a direct flight and I know my laptop wouldn't.

If I don't use the credit on an interesting trip, I can use it next time I visit my parents in Los Angeles. But what would be the fun in that?
