Gecko 1.8 branch created

The Mozilla source tree Branched for Gecko 1.8 on Friday, August 12. Firefox 1.5 beta, Firefox 1.5, and Thunderbird 1.5 will all be released from the Gecko 1.8 branch.

There were a lot of last-minute checkins before the tree closed to branch at midnight Thursday night. A last-minute checkin related to split windows went in, and the Mozilla Quality Blog is asking for help testing for regressions related to this checkin. My last-minute checkin caused at least one regression.

Now that the tree has branched, the trunk is open for exciting changes such as using Cairo for all graphics, unified storage of profile data, and other big Gecko 1.9 changes. To learn about other things that might happen on the trunk between now and when Firefox 2.0 branches, see "Mozilla 2" and "Firefox" in the Mozilla Wiki.

I have not decided whether The Burning Edge will primarily follow the branch or the trunk.

It has to be the branch, as most people will be more immediately concerned with what’s in the forthcoming release (1.5), however trunk updates will be interesting too from time to time

Branch, that’s where the testing is needed most. Those who rather indulge a craving for novelty than help out can always follow the mozillazine build forum.

I’d also like to see the branch, with a switch and catch-up showing the most major trunk checkins so far when Firefox 1.5 has been released. :-)

Wouldn’t the branch be the Simmering Edge? :P

The Mozilla community needs you to keep track of the bugs that will ruin Firefox 1.5 if they come with the release. There are many exciting features in v1.5, but also regressions and UI problems that must be fixed. I hope you’ll help developers stay on top of the problems. Thanks a lot for your hard work.

I’d like to see the branch as well.

    And I agree with Jugulator.

    Branch till 1.5. Trunk afterward.

I would say branch please. Although, the trunk changes are going to be the most sexy changes in the list, for those of us who do serious xul development for Firefox, the branch changes are the most important to us. Honestly, it will be the most important for many people as they will be moving from 1.0.x to 1.5.x, not 1.0.x to trunk.

In any case, would it be possible to do updates on both, create a second blog for trunk or anything along those lines?

In any case, thanks for your great work here. Your blog is invaluable.

Trunk *and* branch :). I’m really curious of the trunk updates, those are the coolest. Branch updates are important too. If I should pick one: trunk.

Thanks for making “burning edge”. Very good!
