Btw, sorry for not updating The Burning Edge yesterday. I was taking a Set Theory final (one problem was “Prove 2+2=4 for real numbers and for cardinal numbers”) and moving from my dorm to home.

Out of curiosity… what was your proof? :-)

  3. Jesse Ruderman Says:

For real numbers, I appealed to the isomorphic embeddings (all called “E”) of the naturals in the integers, the integers in the rationals, and the rationals in the reals. Then I proved 2 + 2 = 4 for naturals.

    I use ^ for “successor” here (it’s usually written as a superscript +). 2 + 2 = 2 + 0^^ = (2 + 0)^^ = 2^^ = 4.

To understand why the proof goes this way, you have to know about the definition of + for naturals. + is defined recursively such that x + 0 = x and x + k^ = (x + k)^. The “recursion theorem” that allows us to make recusrive definitions follows from induction and takes half a class period to prove.

For cardinals, I picked two disjoint sets with two elements, wrote their union, and said that their union contained four elements.

I’m going back to the 12/18 build for OSX (and have commented in the Mozillazine builds OSX thread).

I’m curious if others have the same experience:
With builds after 12/18 through 12/23, I can’t log in to Mozillazine (nor Spamcop) — the button’s inactive. This was a bug a week or two ago for a few days that’s come back.

With builds since early December, Adblock and FlashClicktoView fail to ask where to put files and have to be reinstalled with every new nightly. NukeAnything continues to ask where to install and persists nicely. (I reverted briefly to the Oct 26th build, and the two extensions then behaved properly and asked where to be installed — so I think it’s the nightly builds interacting somehow).

With the Oct. 26th build and through November, I could never get passwords to save, til early December when that started working.

So … I’d rather reinstall 2 extensions than retype my passwords. Back to Dec. 18th for now.
