I’m trying to get of sense of where the trunk is at vis-a-vis the 1.0 build. I used nightlies up till the 1.0 landing but haven’t since, on the advice of various people. Is the quality of trunk builds getting to the point where it’s usable by non-hardcore bug reporters?

  2. inpheaux Says:

there is still a rather large number of bugs present in these builds. see the (discussion) link under official windows. there’s still seven problems from the new prefs window [though the whole “breaks every theme ever” issue isn’t listed, because it isn’t really a bug], and beyond that we’ve got 24 major bugs still leftover from before the prefs window broke everything worse than usual.

it’s getting close, but not quite ready for the casual nightly-build-user.

  3. Jafe Says:

I’m a little confused about extensions with these nightlies. Do any extensions work, or do they all have to be fixed to work with the trunk builds now? I tried installing a couple, they all said they installed (they weren’t flagged as incompatible), but none of them worked.

  4. Jesse Ruderman Says:

All of the extensions I have installed (Thumbs, Search Keys, Google Pagerank Status) still work in the March 5 nightly I’m using. I think I installed them using a previous nightly.

    rodii,
I’ve been using trunk builds (for mac os x) since ben merged aviry with trunk and I must say I’ve had very few issues with the trunk… except I’ve had more issues in the last week… random slow downs and times where Firefox just hangs for a a minute or two (yes clean profile).

Also when I select any bit of text, in lets say the location bar, pressing back arrow (<-) should move the curser to the start of the highlighted text, which it doesn’t.

The other issue I see, from time to time, is the inability to close tabs…

  6. Tony Says:

I just starting using trunks again with the 20050305 build the other day, and I must say for me it’s got to the point where it’s ‘worth it’ again. The fixes and advances outweight the issues for my usage. For what I do, I really don’t see any real bugs.

Things I really like and would hate to do without include scrolling in div overflow, better memory release when closing tabs, picture previews in tabs, no more flicker on sites like Gamespot, and more. I use 22 extensions at the moment, and all of them work. You may have to bump a version number up or two, but they’re working fine for me. It’s good to be using nightlies again.

question: can anyone give me a link or explain to me how to find out how to try different builds with a different folder. official and unofficial ones. problem is, if i just unzip an unofficial one to a different folder, it just opens regular firefox.

and what exactly do i do with mozconfig?

  8. Tony Says:

Different builds? As in, the optimized builds? And what exactly is ‘it’ that opens regular Firefox? Of course your shortcut is going to open the regular Firefox… but if you’re actually going into the new folder and clicking the new .exe, I don’t see how it could be launching the original.

  9. rodii Says:

Thanks for all the info, folks. (Except you, mortgage, you suck. :)

  10. hodeez Says:

yes the optimized builds, currently im using moox, but it only worked after i replaced the contents over the original firefox in the default folder. otherwise itll just open it like a shortcut.

I appreciate the warning of a few days ago:
    > getting close, but not quite ready for the
    > casual nightly-build-user.

I think that describes me (for OSX).

I’ve been using the new G3 optimized unofficial build (no link here yet but see the forums, its from macgeneral.de)

But I hope someone will put up a Welcome Back Casual Crash Testers sign when the time’s right.

Did you see the last version of WordPress in action at Blake Ross’ blog ? No spam in comments anymore … until they begin to use OCR ! :-)

  13. Jesse Ruderman Says:

I don’t think visual captchas are the right approach to stopping spam. They waste legitimate users’ time and discriminate against blind users. They don’t really stop spam: spammers can look at captchas themselves, pay people in India to look at them, convince porn surfers to look at them, or invest in OCR research.

I think the right way to stop spam is a centralized service that doesn’t require commenters to register but actively blocks spamming IPs. The service could use a trust metric, but it doesn’t have to.

    > when I select any bit of text .. , pressing back arrow (

  15. Hank Roberts Says:

    Oops, thanks Jesse.
I notice that selection-back-arrow bug with the official 1.0.1 Windows release; but at home I’m using Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.7.6) Gecko/20050322 Firefox/1.0.2 from the Aviary pre-release folder and left or right arrow jumps properly to the end of a text selection. So, it’s fixed, ‘in the future’ coming soon.
