Someone filed a bug, mentioned in the Mozillazine thread:

#305694 [Firefox]-dragging extension from finder produces infinite "install now" loop [Mac]

By the way, that thread is titled "Trunk" but the same problem affects the branch builds since the recent branch.
I haven't figured out yet if it's one already described in Bugzilla, or not. Puzzling over the many extension bug reports.

I've been able to install extensions with the 8/17 build, but nothing after it. Thank you for pointing me to the discussion thread, very much appreciated! :)

Same here, and there's a thread in the Builds area of Mozilla's discussions about this. One person with OSX 10.4 and a G5 processor is able to install extensions into recent nightlies; the rest of us posting there can't.
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=308078
I haven't found a bug number for this one yet.

Glad you asked!
It seems to be a problem that happened just before the recent branch, because it's a problem for both branch and trunk nightlies for OSX. I have to revert to the 7/30 build to install an extension if I need one.

For some reason, I cannot install extensions lately (Mac OS X). The Install button counts down so I hit Install again, it counts down and I hit Install again... and over and over we go. I'm going to go hunt for a possible bug report, but I was wondering if anyone else is seeing this issue.
