If I remember correctly, you bought the Canon Digital Elph 400 aka Ixus 400. It has a manual setting (the M on the mode wheel). You can turn off AiAF in the menu (not in automatic mode). It will then focus on the exact center of the image. You can then lock the focus by pressing the left arrow ("AFL" will appear) and moving your camera to adjust the composition. Turn AFL off again if you need to change focus.

It's still autofocus, though, but that's about the best you can get with non-SLR cameras.

By the way, I'm rather jealous of that butterfly spectacle. I would have enjoyed it for sure.

Congrats on the move to Wordpress.

The amount of butterflies is crazy. Walking through them I feel like I'm in a Hitchcock movie or something.

If its a digital camera, you can usually get a focus lock on something at a correct distance by holding down the shutter button half-way (focus on your hand) then move the camera to the correct distance.

Welcome the Painted Ladies ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Painted_lady ) who are migrating north from Mexico for the summer.

Way neat stuff.

Yeah...the butterflies are out in full force right now. I haven't seen this sort of thing since about 2003.

BTW Jesse, get some more sleep. You fell asleep in Dr. Graham's class yesterday. ;-)
